About this listen

A podcast about motherhood & music! Conversations with musician moms about their journey to and through motherhood while being a musician. We talk about challenges, joys, how we do make a messy but satisfying creative life while being a mom.

Meet your host! Suzanna Choffel is a musician, songwriter, radio personality (Sun Radio) & mother living in Austin, TX. She has toured internationally, been on NBC's The Voice, recorded four studio albums and spent time on the road with everyone from Adrian Quesada to Davíd Garza, Carbon Leaf & more. Her latest album Bird by Bird (2024) explores the multitudes found in both motherhood & midlife, a pandemic, mental health, living in New York City, the death of Breonna Taylor & more! While recording her latest album, her producer & friend Davíd Garza mentioned he thought she should start this podcast, combining her love & knowledge of music, conversation & of course motherhood! Voila! A new podcast was born...(a couple of years later).

We can't wait for you to meet all of the amazing mothers making rad music, raising rad children & just being general badasses in the world!

Welcome back! Sorry I took a brief pause for LIFE! Music, motherhood, travel...it's all a lot but I'm now back in the swing with some great new conversations lined up for you for late spring! Right before things got nutty in March, I sat down with my friend Charlie Faye to talk about her version of motherhood in the music industry.

A lifelong musician herself, Charlie enjoys bridging the gap between artists and industry as a manager. She was chosen to participate in Austin Music Foundation's Leaders in Austin Music program, and was named a Changemaker by Austin Woman Magazine in recognition of her services for musicians, music businesses, and music nonprofits. Charlie has spoken on panels at conferences like AmericanaFest and Folk Alliance International. She has also dedicated her time to working on projects related to affordable housing for artists.

Charlie has formed fun projects like The Fayettes & the Fanimals (a super fun kids album if you need some new driving music with the kiddos!) which we will talk about and I think it's important to note that she is the first mom on here who is a single/solo parent so we will get a chance to dive into what that version of parenting is like as well.

Charlie is currently an artist manager & head of artist services for Traffic Music Group where she helps steer the careers of Somebody Someone, Judy Blank, Dylan Leblanc, Jon Muq, Quentin, Lew Apollo and others.

    Mar 10 2026

Raina Rose is so cool. A friend for many years, she moves through the world as a mom, friend, artist, and human in a way I really admire - in tune with the earth & her community. She grew up in Portland and I feel like you can hear the sound of the Pacific Northwest in her gorgeous folk tunes. (Her album Caldera is a fave!)

Raina has toured relentlessly for the better part of the last ten years, supporting such acts as Jill Sobule, The Bacon Brothers, Loudon Wainwright III and Tracy Grammer, and sharing the stage with contemporaries such as John Elliott, Rebecca Loebe, Jonathan Byrd, AJ Roach, and Anthony da Costa. Now married to bass player, Andrew Pressman (Jimmie LaFave, Sam Baker, Ben Kweller, Carrie Elkin) and a mother of two young boys, Raina tours less often and more succinctly.

After 8 years of living in a car and playing over 200 dates a year, this is a welcome change. Her travels have taken her everywhere across the USA and Europe, including such venues and gigs as the High Sierra Music Festival, Vancouver Island Music Festival, The Kerrville Folk Festival, The Cactus Cafe (Austin, TX), The Kessler Theater (Dallas, TX), Club Passim (Boston, MA), and The Birchmere (Alexandria, VA).

After becoming a mom, Raina made a really cool pivot into the world of herbal skincare & launched her Folk Potions line several years ago & now you can't go to Kerrville Folk Festival without seeing bottles of her Magic Face Oil & salves everywhere.

I loved talking to her about all of this & where she is now in her career (about to release a new album yay!) & motherhood. She was one of the first mamas I reached out to when I became pregnant to ask for advice so it was special to revisit that time & journey into the present. Enjoy!

    Feb 20 2026

Wendy Colonna is just a damn delight! So excited to talk to a longtime friend, peer, mentor & all around badass human & mother.

Wendy Colonna, a Louisiana native, immersed in the music-rich culture of Cajun Country, started singing early, shaped by her diverse heritage. She fell in love with music through church choir, strumming guitars on porches, and her parents’ record collection.

After moving to Austin in 2000, she thrived in its vibrant music scene, earning recognition and commercial success, even contributing to an Ad-Week topping Coca-Cola ad.

She’s released nine commercial albums and has been described as “ethereal” by the NY Times, “a gifted singer-songwriter” by the Wall Street Journal, and the Austin American Statesman calls her “a force of nature.”

Wendy talks openly to me about the myths around motherhood and the music industry as well as the power of human connection within songwriting. We share some sweet memories, both old & new that hopefully will give you some perspective on what it's like to make the tricky but beautiful choice to be a mom as a working musician.
