    John, who competed in the 1968, 1972, and 1976 Summer Olympic Games in cycling, won the 1981 Ironman Triathlon World Championship, and set a world speed record in motor-paced cycling in 1985 that stood for around a decade, co-authored the nonfiction book The Black Cyclone: A Hero the World Forgot with Rene Mauer. The Black Cyclone is about the life and career of Marshall “Major” Taylor, a Black American cyclist who competed professionally in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

    John is of no relation to either the Kennedy family of American political fame, the unrelated U.S. Senator John Neely Kennedy, or the unrelated former Australian Prime Minister John Howard.
