About this listen

In Artist and Chill, Swedish-American visual artist Markus Bowie meets a new guest every episode to casually talk about their relationship to art and culture. The guests vary widely and are in no way limited to art professionals — even though it will feature plenty of those brave souls as well. Everyone has their own personal relation to the arts which is worth discussing at depth, without dumbing it down.© 2023 Artist & Chill Art Philosophy Social Sciences

  • Markus Bowie talks to John Alberts
    Jul 3 2020

The episode was recorded using new microphones so the sound quality is better than in the previous one. As his studio is located in the basement of a building, our talk is also accompanied by the sound of children playing above us and some water gushing through the pipes.

  • Pilot Episode: Markus Bowie talks to Max Arvid
    May 31 2020

The pilot episode of Artist & Chill, recorded in March 2020 fairly deep in the Scandinavian wilderness, featuring my long time friend and culture enthusiast Max Arvid.

We talk about his relationship to visual art: the dubious notion of art as a luxury commodity and how the art market (potentially) thrives on upholding that image. Two shows we saw at the New York Guggenheim back in 2016 - one with contemporary Chinese art and an Agnes Martin retrospective.

Minimalism and some of us being programmed to enjoy it. The museum experience - public art, what kind of responsibility the museum has, if any. How the owner of an artwork - institution or otherwise - influences how the art is perceived by others, the styling of homes in real estate ads and the selection of art shown there, non-public art, art in one's home and its function, whether or not art can be seen without its context, political or otherwise, in a vacuum and if so - why does it matter to you?
