  • Learn Chopin's Nocturne op.9 no. 2 on Piano
    Apr 7 2023

Nocturne op. 9 no. 2 is an incredibly well-known melody that you have likely encountered at some point in your life. It is not considered one of Chopin's most challenging pieces, as it is playable at a grade 9 level RCM. Due to its popularity, however, the piece has been played excessively and performed poorly on numerous occasions, much like Stairway to Heaven for guitarists or Fur Elise by Beethoven for pianists. Some individuals may avoid these overly famous pieces, but I believe they are worth knowing precisely because they are so beloved. They must possess some unique quality to have achieved such widespread acclaim. Despite Chopin's groundbreaking contributions to the Nocturne genre, he was heavily influenced by John Field, an Irish composer who wrote Nocturnes before him. Chopin regularly taught his music to his students, and one of them, Wilhelm von Lenz, recalls how Chopin was incredibly particular about this particular piece. No one could perform it as well as Chopin himself. When Wilhelm complimented Chopin's playing, he responded, "Liszt can."
