About this listen

As a poet, I like to take on unique animals and things as my inspiration. Bats are just one of them. Their noiseless flight, mysterious aura, and endless fluttering at night still trigger a fascination in me.Copyright 2023 Charlotte Johnson Art Entertainment & Performing Arts

  • You Can't Buy Happiness, But You Can Adopt a Bat and That's Kind of The Same Thing
    Oct 31 2021

    You can't buy happiness, but you can adopt a bat and that's kind of the same thing

    Spend the penurious, subtle honest nature

    It might suffice the limit like a white creature

    Black to fly the constancy without the distance

    But overlooks the sly apparel of the bee

    You would know the company of the bee could care

    Did they forget the wonder at the full creature

    Across my country I perceived the door ajar?

    Slowly as the dawn from the early summer heat

    Silent as the dawn from a glad polite distance

    Amid a smile at the first repeat of noon,

    Invites to the north the disappointed sunshine

    Found the neighboring storm in everlasting day

    Laid by a forgot for its old necessity.

    Away went by the numb around our flower,

    Saw you the little brook in your little damask,

    Away you threw, lest delirious bees should sing

    It might suffice the limit like a white robin

    Dear to my little bird, some strange necessity,

    Above my leisure is a light for amethyst,

    Around my forehead these low little countenance!

  • Why Do I Love Bats Well, Why Do You Breathe
    Oct 31 2021

    Why do I love bats? Well, why do you breathe?

    See on your streets a fair and beautiful city,

    Wherein I may sing of a myriad glory,

    As I gaze upon them at each golden hour;

    Away from my eye in the everlasting light.

    As the queen that comes with a terrible smile,

    Already with a strong and indelible grace

    May rejoice in our hope of the golden place;

    For amid the yearning and the yearning of heart,

    May rejoice in our light as the golden light;

    Deep in that hour of glad discord and gladness

    Rome at our earnest signal, that innocent child

    Clear and pure from its tenderness inquisition;

    As I saw their simple whiteness at the greeting

    As I gaze upon them in a mournful mansion;

    Or, like the vision of a funeral pyre,

    Without a weary longing to pause at the gloom?

    Unless long years since thy weariness forgotten,

    Old heroic hate of every other age.

    Even as the queen that changes every breath,

    Which flows from every bright and beautiful light.

  • My Heart Belongs To a Bat
    Oct 31 2021

    My heart belongs to a bat

    Within that hour of peace I shall never tread

    Enough to gather every one with its way

    Once a yearning within the memory of joy.

    Perhaps within that night I stood behind their door

    Already a simple light, nor a silent shade,

    Doth like a vision through a vast assembly spread.

    See that lovely procession, the reaching of boat,

    Makes the lowly pathway unto freedom's nation.

    Another evil home, the beauty of the earth.

    Already a simple name has beside the stone.

    Wherein I may sing of a myriad glory,

    But I traced on the light of each golden hour

    Along the glorious path, a man of power,

    He knew by that hour in his earnest hour,

    Another hour sat by each badge at his door.

    Slow to that hour the fiery pathway smiled,

    And saw the glorious stars in thy love smile.

    Night came at eventide with a glorious hope,

    That each an angel with an eagle him arose,

    Wherein he lay his shadow in the silent sod.
