🎙️ Bella Creole Life: The Podcast
Episode 4: Coincoin — The Woman Who Built a Legacy

    Hey cousin… come sit a spell. ❤️

Today on the porch, we’re stepping into a story that deserves to be felt, not just heard.

And we’re not doing it alone…

✨ In this episode, I’m joined by our Junior Bella Creole Life Curators—Drew and Ian—the next generation helping us understand, preserve, and carry our culture forward.

Together, we explore the life of Marie Thérèse Coincoin—a woman born into slavery in colonial Louisiana who would go on to build something extraordinary: not just freedom… but legacy.

✨ In this episode, we explore:

🌿 The world Coincoin was born into—Natchitoches and the Cane River region
🌿 How she used knowledge, skill, and resilience to gain influence in a system designed to limit her
🌿 The fight to secure freedom—not just for herself, but for her children
🌿 How she built economic power through land, farming, trade, and medicine
🌿 The complex and honest truths of survival in colonial Louisiana
🌿 And how her children helped establish Isle Brevelle—one of the most powerful Creole communities in history

💡 This isn’t just a story about one woman.

    It’s a story about:
    Faith.
    Family.
    Strategy.
    Survival.
And what it means to build something that lasts beyond your lifetime.

Because what Coincoin created didn’t end with her—
it lives on through generations, through community, and through places like St. Augustine Catholic Church that still stand today.

💭 From me to you, cousin…
This episode is a reminder that legacy isn’t always loud.
Sometimes it’s built quietly—through decisions, sacrifices, and perseverance.

Episode 2: Faith — The Root That Holds Us

    Bella Creole Life: The Podcast

In Episode 2 of Bella Creole Life: The Podcast, we begin at the root — Faith — and explore the deep role the Catholic Church has played in shaping Creole families, communities, and identity across generations.

From childhood memories of church life in Cloutierville to catechism classes, church fairs, cemetery cleanups, and All Saints and All Souls Day traditions, this episode reflects on how faith was not just practiced, but lived — as a rhythm of everyday life.

Cici shares heartfelt and humorous stories, including an unforgettable childhood moment that sparked her first real prayer, memories of Midnight Mass and family rosaries, and the powerful influence of Creole women, elders, and religious leaders who modeled devotion through action and love.

The episode also journeys to Southwest Louisiana — Oberlin, Lake Charles, Prairie Ronde, and sacred places of pilgrimage — where faith deepened through community, Cursillo, prayer, and time spent at the Ave Maria Shrine with beloved family members. We also honor the legacy of Henriette Delille and the Sisters of the Holy Family, whose presence affirmed the place of Creole people of color within the Catholic faith.

As always, the episode weaves together Faith, Family, Food, and Fun, reminding us that our cultural memories are inseparable from the traditions that shaped us.

This episode is not just about one family’s story — it’s an invitation to our big ol’ Louisiana Creole family, wherever you may be in the world, to reflect, remember, and reconnect.
