  • Worlding Papanek: Alumni Taking the Helm
    Apr 15 2021

Worlding Papanek: Alumni Taking the Helm' is the first episode of this podcast series based on the event Better design: Talking beyond Papanek’ in collaboration with Design Museum Den Bosch’s exhibition, Victor Papanek: The Politics of Design.

By examining some of the gaps and fragilities into Papanek's thinking, we attempt to project it towards new possible futures with a critical yet constructive view. From a different time and with current tools, we address three key critical elements/gaps of Papanek's approach: feminism, queerism, orientalism. Together with the Design Academy Eindhoven graduates Lydia Hwang, Serina Tarkhanian and Dae Uk Kim, we focus on the notion of otherness and worlding in Papanek’s work, or the lack thereof and think of other futures by taking a closer look at their graduation projects.

  • Beyond Universal Design: Design from Atypical Lives
    Apr 22 2021

'Beyond Universal Design: Design from atypical lives' is the second episode of this podcast series based on the event Better design: Talking beyond Papanek’ in collaboration with Design Museum Den Bosch’s exhibition, Victor Papanek: The Politics of Design.

In this episode, we have a critical look into the notion of ‘enabling’ in Papanek’s work and extend the notion of designed ‘for’ to designed ‘with’. This draws from the larger theme of designing for people’s needs (rather than their wants or artificially created wants).

This episode brings together Simon Dogger, inclusive designer, and Initiators of the project FysiekFabriek; Aurore Brard (inclusive designer) and Lotte de Haan (social designer), in discussion around what it means to design with others. They shared their experiences on using design to think through the built environment with and for people with disabilities.
