About this listen

Beyond the Buzz is a youth-led podcast series created by Youth Unity CIC, focused on honest conversations about drugs, alcohol, peer pressure, and the realities young people face when navigating substance use in everyday life.

This programme is commissioned by Havering Council Public Health and delivered in partnership with CGL Havering, supporting prevention, early intervention, and informed decision-making among young people.

What makes Beyond the Buzz different is that it is told by young people, for young people. In each episode, young people share what they know, what they see happening around them, the pressures they experience, and the questions they have in their own words and without judgement. Discussions explore myths, risks, social influences, and how choices can impact wellbeing, friendships, education, and future opportunities.

The series is designed not only to support young listeners, but also to help parents, carers, and professionals better understand young people’s perspectives. Episodes are suitable for use as conversation starters in schools, youth settings, and family discussions, supporting education around substance use in a relatable and non-lecture-based way.

Through creative workshops and podcast training, young people are involved in every stage of production — from choosing topics and shaping questions to recording and producing episodes — building confidence, communication skills, and a sense of ownership over messages that affect their lives.

Beyond the Buzz forms part of Youth Unity’s wider commitment to early intervention, wellbeing, and positive youth development, creating safe spaces where young people can speak openly and access support without stigma.
