    Aug 14 2025

    Send a text

In this episode of the Birds of Uganda Podcast, we turn our ears to the unmistakable call of the Hadada Ibis. A sound that can stir very different emotions depending on who’s listening. For some, this bird’s cry near home is a sign of misfortune; for others, it’s a reminder of deep parental love and sacrifice. We explore these contrasting cultural beliefs, the Hadada’s unique place in Ugandan folklore, and the beauty it adds to our natural soundscape. Along the way, we share field recordings, including a special one captured at Lake Mburo National Park, the only park in Uganda where people, cattle, and wildlife live side by side, with the community playing a role in its management.

    Apr 3 2025

    Send a text

Deep in Uganda's Mabamba Swamp lives the shoebill – a bird so prehistoric-looking it's often called a "living dinosaur." But who would dare steal such a magnificent creature right from its natural habitat?

Meet Hannington Kasasa, chairperson of the Mabamba Wetland Ecotourism Association, whose remarkable journey from curious 9-year-old boy to pioneering bird guide spans nearly four decades. Sitting beneath an acacia tree at the Mabamba landing site, surrounded by busy fishermen and the constant activity of weaver birds building nests, Kasasa shares his extraordinary story.
