Annica Farley is chair and head coach of Bishop’s Stortford Handball Club, based at Herts & Essex Sports Centre. Since getting involved with local handball in 2017, she has helped grow the sport across the area through club sessions, school partnerships and a pathway that now reaches from first-timers all the way to national and international competition.

In this conversation, Annica explains what handball actually is and why it works so well for a wide range of young people. Fast, physical and high-scoring, it draws on skills found in other sports, but it also creates opportunities for children who may not yet have found the activity that suits them. She talks about working with gymnasts, musicians, drama students and complete beginners who have come into the sport through school sessions and then gone on to thrive.

The episode also shows just how far that pathway can go. Bishop’s Stortford Handball Club now has teams competing at a high level, with players progressing through regional academies and into Great Britain selection. What comes through strongly is that the club is not only about performance. It is also about confidence, belonging, volunteering and giving young people something meaningful to commit to.

Jim Hook is chairperson of the volunteers for Friends of Southern Country Park, a group helping care for one of Bishop’s Stortford’s most loved green spaces. Having lived in the town for nearly 50 years, he now spends part of his retirement helping protect, improve and champion the park for both people and wildlife.

In this conversation, Jim explains what the Friends group actually does. Working alongside East Herts, the volunteers take on the kind of practical jobs that help keep the park special, from spreading woodchip on muddy paths and rebuilding steps to cutting back overgrowth, mending fences and creating habitat features that protect more sensitive parts of the site.

The episode also looks at the park’s wildlife and future plans. Jim talks about the long-running butterfly records gathered at Southern Country Park, the moth counts currently being carried out, and a new Butterfly Bank project the group hopes to build to encourage even more species into the park. It is a conversation about conservation, community effort and the importance of valuing the green spaces that make Bishop’s Stortford what it is.
