About this listen

In this episode the question of whether one is a food or sugar addict takes center stage. I acknowledge the appearance of addictive behaviors, making it challenging to envision a life where sugar is enjoyed in moderation. The revelation comes not from labeling sugar as the core problem but rather as a solution to a deeper issue. The crux of the matter lies in the establishment of a habit where food becomes the go-to escape for uncomfortable emotions such as loneliness, boredom, anxiety, self-doubt, self-pity, and overwhelm. This unconscious turn towards food creates a sense of powerlessness to break the cycle. Attempts to address the issue through diets or sugar avoidance often lead to two outcomes. One may succeed in adhering to the diet, only to find that a single deviation thrusts them back into the starting point. On the other hand, an inability to stick to the diet results in a repetitive cycle of attempts and failures. Both approaches hinge on the belief that food is the root problem. I tried these methods for decades, living in either a highly restricted or compulsive manner, neither of which proved ideal. The turning point came when the focus shifted away from food. Adopting a balanced and compassionate approach, the goal was to learn to cope with uncomfortable emotions without relying on food. My own experience and that or the clients I work with reveals that it is possible to break free from these patterns. Acknowledging that occasional returns to old habits may occur, the key lies in recognizing the learning opportunities within those experiences. With time, perseverance, kindness, and curiosity, you can reach a point where food or sugar is no longer a constant concern. The ability to choose whether to eat something is regained, freeing you from feeling compelled to do so. The illusion of addiction dissipates as courage is summoned to confront the uncomfortable feelings once masked by the reliance on food.
