  • Local successes and global challenges in Hepatitis C elimination
    Feb 2 2026

This two-part episode of Buffalo HealthCast explores Hepatitis C treatment in Buffalo and in global contexts. In part one, family nurse practitioner and recent MPH graduate Sean Owen talks with guest host Jennifer Foster of the Office of Global Health Initiatives about hepatitis c: what it is, how it’s treated, barriers to care, and global efforts to eliminate the virus. Owen talks about his long-running work in Rochester specializing in drug user health, harm reduction, and treatment and prevention of hepatitis C and HIV, along with his recent MPH field training experiences addressing hepatitis C under the supervision of Dr. Anthony Martinez at his clinic La Bodega at the Erie County Medical Center.

In part two of this episode, Sean Owen talks to Scott Springer, a physician assistant at La Bodega. Owen and Springer discuss La Bodega’s unique model of treatment and holistic care, which has contributed to great success in treating and curing hepatitis C among western New York patients. They also explore reasons why hepatitis C elimination efforts are unique in different parts of the country and different parts of the world.

From high-throughput pathogen detection technologies to locally producible rapid diagnostics, Dr. Baker explores how these tools are being developed and adapted for use in low-resource settings. She shares insights from global studies, including the use of geo-trackers to trace transmission pathways, and explains how simple, affordable diagnostic tools can help address health inequities and inform targeted public health interventions.

Tune in to learn how cutting-edge tools are shaping global strategies for water sanitation, infectious disease prevention, and health equity.
