About this listen
In this episode, we step into one of the most exciting traditions in the electric utility world—the lineman’s rodeo. It’s where skill, speed, and safety come together in a high-energy competition that showcases the very best of the lineworker profession.
Held each May at Camp John Hope, the Georgia Lineman's Rodeo brings together lineworkers from across the state for a day of competition, camaraderie, and community.
This event highlights the real-world skills lineworkers use every day, including:
Pole climbing and equipment handling
Transformer change-outs
Rescue scenarios and safety demonstrations
But it’s more than just a competition—it’s a family-friendly event that celebrates the people who keep the power on.
Each October, top competitors advance to the International Lineman's Rodeo, held in Kansas City—the largest event of its kind in the world.
Often called the “Olympics of linework,” this rodeo brings together thousands of lineworkers from across the country and around the globe to compete at the highest level.
Participants face intense, timed events that test:
Technical precision
Safety under pressure
Team coordination
Problem-solving in real-life scenarios
The weekend also includes a trade show, training opportunities, and a strong sense of brotherhood and pride within the industry.
Lineman’s rodeos aren’t just about competition—they reinforce the skills that keep crews safe and communities powered. Every climb, every drill, and every second counts.
For lineworkers, it’s a chance to:
Sharpen their craft
Represent their co-op or utility
Build camaraderie with peers across the industry
For communities, it’s a glimpse into the dedication, training, and teamwork required to keep the lights on.
From Camp John Hope to Kansas City, the lineman’s rodeo is where preparation meets performance—and where the best in the business rise to the challenge.
