  • S2E19: How to lose your money in 30 minutes…
    Oct 24 2024

In this podcast, we dive into the wild world of e-transfer fraud and how immigrants (like us!) can sometimes feel like we're navigating a financial obstacle course in Canada. 💥

Then, we get into the nitty-gritty of how e-transfers actually work—and how scammers use loopholes to snatch your cash while you're left waiting for that pending deposit to hit. Spoiler alert: it's a sneaky system, and scammers are pros at making you think you're richer than you are (we’ve all been there, right? 💸).

We chat about how financial institutions seem more focused on selling you things you don’t need—like a $120 credit card to a 90-year-old grandma who’s just trying to chill in her golden years 🛳️.

But hey, it’s not all doom and gloom! There are ways to protect yourself, like setting up text notifications for every transaction.

In the end, the moral is simple: educate yourself, don’t click on sketchy links, and keep your money where it belongs—in your account! Oh, and if you ever get an email from "Canada Post" saying your package is about to be lost forever, just laugh and delete it. 📦😂

Canada’s Interac payment system is very useful but also has many hidden dangers and pitfalls:

A Go Public test has since found that some e-transfers can be cancelled, even when the recipient has autodeposit, depending on what financial institution the money is sent from.

Some banks allow etransfer senders to cancel the transaction even half an hour after it was sent.

Neil Joshi, a Toronto teacher, lost $2,790 after he e-transferred a payment to his HVAC contractor, but it was intercepted by a fraudster. Neither his nor the intended recipient's bank will reimburse the stolen funds. "What I find remarkable is that none of these banks seem to be taking any measures to address this type of security issue," wrote Joshi to Go Public. "Their attitude was, 'As long as we're not on the hook for the funds … it's not our problem.'"

Banks typically refuse to take responsibility for funds going to the wrong account and regularly tell customers there’s nothing they can do.

The etransfer system has been abused to defraud many bank customers who expected their banks to be more careful with their money.

  • S2E18: Are we cringey?
    Oct 3 2024

In this podcast episode we discussed our many experiences with culture shock and cringe-worthy moments after immigrating to Canada.

We couldn't help but laugh as we recalled times like standing too close to people while in line at Tim Hortons or constantly being asked about our cricket skills. It was entertaining to share stories of mistakenly speaking the wrong South Asian language with colleagues or facing assumptions based on our appearances. 🥺

Throughout, we highlighted how stereotypes exist on both sides but emphasized embracing our own identities rather than worrying too much what others think.

All in all, it was an insightful yet humorous conversation about navigating different cultural norms. 🖖🏽

Thanks for listening! Don't forget to LIKE & SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss our next episode where we'll talk about managing your money in Canada...

We look forward to reading your COMMENTS as you share your own cringey stories and how you overcame them. ☕️

  • S2E17: Should I leave Canada in 2024? Part 1
    Sep 11 2024

Should I leave Canada in 2024? We will leave that up to you after you listen to this hilariously serious podcast!

This podcast focuses on ‘reverse immigration’ in Canada and highlights the complex challenges faced by immigrants. While Canada has historically welcomed a large influx of newcomers, the current infrastructure and economic realities are straining to accommodate this growth. Even immigrants are saying there are too many immigrants! (…especially in Brampton)

Immigrants are reporting difficulties in finding suitable employment, adjusting to the high cost of living, and even facing discrimination within their own communities. This has led some to reconsider their decision to settle in Canada, opting instead for countries with better economic opportunities.

The conversation is not all seriousness though! We touch upon the wild driving shenanigans of immigrants as well.

For example, the Ridgeway Plaza is the immigrant version of the Wild West - a cultural melting pot where the only thing in danger of getting wrecked is your car. Forget about getting any sleep on the weekends, when the place turns into a 24/7 party zone! It's no wonder the locals are worried about their property values - I'm surprised they haven't started charging admission just to keep the chaos contained.

If you did not have enough of Ridgeway Plaza you could also buy a ticket and see if you can survive driving through Brampton…Where car accidents are as common as maple syrup!
