  • Caregivers are like Transformers.

Looking back over the ten years of my caregiving days.  I indeed, did some Self-Transforming.  Self-transforming that I am talking about here, refers to the process of equipping myself with the knowledge about Alzheimer’s disease, resources, services, how to partner with our doctors personal and relational skills to make my home and work environment sink together.  My home had become a workplace because I had to hire in-home caregivers to assist me with the care of my mother.

In-home caregiver, they must have a license from the county that they live in and fingerprints to present at the interview when I was looking for help. In addition, I did call their references and if they were hired, I did not leave the house right away I watched with a close eye to determine whether this person was a good fit.

First transformation, from Connie to primary caregiver.  Second, I became a durable power of attorney that power of attorney typically remains in effect until death of the principal or until the document is revoked.  Third, I became the payee for my mother’s social security check and last the fiduciary for my mother's Veterans Aid and Attendance check.  Not to mention I became an employee.  I scheduled caregivers, scheduled the times they needed off and called a backup caregiver and crossed my fingers that they would be available.

I also had duties like scheduling appointments, assisting my mother with the prep for certain tests. Furthermore, I was her live in companion when she was in the hospital and her spokesperson.  I turned into everything I needed to be to assist my mother live her life with dignity and happiness.

As an advocate you do what needs to be done to make sure you and your family are being respected and cared for properly that covers doctors, pharmacy techs, nurses, and everyone you meet regarding your loved one’s illness.
