In Chapter 8, "Jia Baoyu's Strange Fated Encounter Recognizes the Golden Lock; Xue Baochai Coincidentally Recognizes the Spiritual Stone," one of the novel's most crucial romantic plotlines—the destined "Gold and Jade Match"—is officially introduced, sparking the first subtle confrontation in the story's central love triangle.

Baoyu visits an ailing Xue Baochai at the Pear Tree Court. In a famous scene, they examine each other's birth amulets. Baochai reads the inscription on Baoyu's jade ("Never lose it, never forget it, and your life will be long and prosperous"), while Baoyu examines her golden locket, finding a perfectly matching couplet ("Never leave it, never abandon it, and your youth will be eternal"). Just as the weight of this destined match hangs in the air, Lin Daiyu makes a perfectly timed, dramatic entrance. Her witty, jealous remark, "If I had known he was coming, I wouldn't have come," brilliantly captures her sensitivity and insecurity. The ensuing banter at Aunt Xue's dinner table provides a masterclass in subtle psychological warfare and character dynamics.
