  • Should Churches Use Members’ Data?
    Aug 11 2022

Click here to view the full show notes and transcript for this episode.

Let's face it— data drives decisions.

In this regard, churches also need data to inform their complex decisions.

Pastors in the churches could have started collecting data out of necessity, like gathering basic details such as the church members' names, ages, and home addresses. In fact, these data are so familiar that church pastors only rely on their memories.

But today, it's an entirely different story. You have more sophisticated church members; you church membership has increased. Then, you have to encode other significant information like tithes collection, employment, attendance, or cultural orientation.

So, you turn to digital software and services to assist you in all these activities.

But there are some pressing questions that you must consider:

Should you use the church members' data?

Even more important is this: how do you use these data?

In this episode, Frank Barry and Dean Sweetman have this intimate and enlightening conversation on the central and sensitive themes surrounding the use of church data for many purposes. Ultimately, the answer concerns how pastors can use these data to shepherd their church members.

"That's our fundamental belief that pastors are trying to care for their people, and that's the reason they're using the data. We think it's really about caring for your people and paying attention to the things that really matter. How do you do that? And how do you use data as part of all of those things to be healthy?"
    -Frank Barry

If you’re searching for answers to the most pressing questions about church data, we have the right data that you need for your questions in this episode.

By the end of this episode, you will learn:

    • A comparison of how pastors collected data then and now
    • Why churches shouldn’t be afraid of collecting data
    • The data that really matters at church
    • How effectively using data equates to loving people
    • Practical, ethical, and Christian means to uphold the value of church data
    • Embracing the technology to use data for the church’s benefits

With all the buzz surrounding the word ‘metaverse’ and news of companies like Facebook investing in its development, many people wonder how it will impact the church.

One question that may be on the minds of many people in leadership positions in churches and other spiritual communities is whether they should hop aboard this next wave of technology or avoid it for fear that it will put them at risk.

The answer to this question is not as cut-and-dried as it might seem. For starters, there are some clear benefits to embracing new technology: for one thing, it can help us engage our congregants in ways that were previously impossible.

But there are also risks associated with this technology—especially when it comes to how it may impact our faith and practices.

We believe that there is a lot to be said about the power of face-to-face interaction and interaction within communities.

In fact, the metaverse can play a significant role in helping us create communities that allow us to come together and share ideas, but is it right for every church? How can it be used effectively while maintaining faithfulness?

We invite you to join this episode as we explore these questions in more detail and discuss how the metaverse might affect your church community. Dean Sweetman and Frank Barry will talk about what they think about using the metaverse for ministry, how it might work best in your church, and what potential pitfalls could arise from implementing this new approach.

“The church has to stay committed to taking ground, buying land, building buildings, getting people in physical locations, and having the miracle that is the kingdom of God on the earth.”
    -Dean Sweetman

There's a lot of debate about the line between in-person and online church. Some people think that if you're not physically present in a church, it's not a church at all. Others believe that it doesn't matter whether you're physically present or not—it's all about your intent.

And we think both of these views are right—to a point. The key is finding a balance that works for your church. This means bringing together the strengths of both in-person and online worship.

For most churches, online infrastructure is now the new normal. Buzzwords like ‘metaverse’ and ‘virtual reality’ will become increasingly common as we move forward into the future of worship.

It’s a brave new world for churches. We are living in an age where technology is changing at breakneck speed. However, we should not forget that face-to-face interaction has always been essential in community building. While we've become accustomed to receiving messages in an online format, we're still social creatures at heart. We want to interact with real people, not just read messages on a digital screen.

Churches need to be willing to adapt to the times. Online church services are gaining in popularity, but many churches are hesitant to make the switch. That's why we're excited to share this episode of Church Tech, where Dean Sweetman and Frank Barry discuss the benefits of integrating online content into your worship services while also emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between in-person and online experiences.

I think that technology is a gift from God to fulfill the Great Commission, going to all the world and preaching the gospel so that people repent and believe that Jesus is Lord and Savior. And that's what's going to change the world.
    --Dean Sweetman

You can do both in-person and online ministry with the right strategy. Find out the key differences and how to combine them so that you can reach more people for Jesus!

By the end of this episode, you will learn:

    • Reasons to consider church online
    • Steps your church should be doing with social media
    • How your church can overcome the digital divide
    • How to find the right mix of the church in-person and church online

Churches are changing to keep up with the times.

And we're not just talking about updating a website or getting a new logo. We mean that churches are evolving to be more inclusive, accessible, and technologically advanced to meet their communities' needs.

In the past, churches were places where people gathered to hear sermons and sing songs. They're still that, but they're also so much more.

Today's churches can be virtual communities that allow people to interact with one another from anywhere in the world. What's more, they're a place of comfort and support for those who need it most—whether they're looking for someone to talk to or someone to put them in touch with their community.

In short, churches today have become multi-faceted hubs for community-building and learning, which is why technology has been playing a greater role in their day-to-day operations than ever before

With that, we're excited to bring you this new podcast series that will help you better understand how to utilize these technologies in your church!

In this introductory episode, Tithe.ly's very own Dean Sweetman, CEO, and Frank Barry, COO, discuss how this new Church Technology podcast may help church leaders and staff stay informed about the latest technologies, trends, and best practices for keeping their church connected in today's digital age.

“A lot of admin goes into the life of church volunteers and church leadership. We can make that easier and scale that to be so much faster by using the tech so they can actually do ministry.”
    -Dean Sweetman

If you're a church leader, you know how hard it can be to keep up with the latest trends in technology. But if you want to learn more about how technology can be used in a meaningful way in your church—and how it can help you become an even better leader—don't miss this one!

By the end of this episode, you will learn:

    • A bit of their background and how they became involved in church technology
    • How to embrace technology in your church
    • Some topics they will cover in the future episodes
