  • Episode 67 - Stuttering Mini-Series Part I: Interview with Matt Phillips
    Jul 12 2026

Matt Phillips is a person who stutters, speech therapist at the Sisskin Stuttering Center, and PhD student at Michigan State University. His personal experiences as a person who stutters have influenced his clinical practice and research interests, which are centered around improving the lives of people who stutter through stutter-affirming practices. As a speech therapist at the Sisskin Stuttering Center, he provides telehealth speech therapy to children, teenagers, and adults who stutter using an Avoidance Reduction Therapy for Stuttering (ARTS®) framework to help his clients reduce the struggle associated with stuttering, communicate more easily and spontaneously, and participate more fully in life. At Michigan State University, Matt works with Dr. Bridget Walsh in the Developmental Speech Lab, where he researches two major questions: (1) why do some children who stutter stop during childhood, whereas others continue into adulthood, and (2) why are some children more negatively affected by their communication difference than others, and how can SLPs help reduce the adverse life impact of stuttering.
