This interview is with Kirk Jones, the filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer of ‘I Swear’, an onscreen retelling of John Davidson’s real-life journey to navigate Tourette’s syndrome. In the film, audiences are introduced to John as a child, thriving in soccer and excited to start grade school. Yet, at an early age, John is diagnosed with Tourette’s, and that changes his whole trajectory from then on. His constant swearing and ticks were met with ignorance many times, but the support he receives from Dottie, a woman battling cancer, helps him break barriers.
In my conversation with Kirk, you’ll learn more about how the director got John Davidson to sign off on the biopic and how ‘I Swear’ portrays the reality of living with Tourette’s, while also finding moments of laughter and levity.
