Birth(day)s, deaths and marriages! Welcome to the evening edition of your local newspaper. Thankfully cycling content is a-plenty as Chris, David and Gary cast their eyes over another fascinating few weeks in pro cycling.

📸 The Dauphiné Libéré (okay, the Tour Auvergne - Rhône-Alpes, if you must) is often seen as a Tour de France indicator, yet in 78 editions only 12 Dauphiné winners have taken the Maillot Jaune in July. The first was Louison Bobet, pictured embracing first wife Christiane after the 1955 finish in Grenoble. Already a two-time Tour winner, Bobet later earned praise from race founder Georges Cazeneuve for “haloing the race with prestige”. (Photo: Dauphine Libéré)

  • Cycling Family Trees Episode 1 - Peugeot
    Jun 1 2026

Every cycling team has a story. In this series, we’ll dig into the teams that made cycling what it is: the dynasties, the cult squads, the superteams, the survivors, and the vanished names that still echo through the peloton today. We’ll look at where they came from, who built them, what they won, what they changed — and what grew from them after the final finish line

In this first episode, Gary Fairley explores the extraordinary history of the Peugeot cycling team - one of the most influential and successful teams the sport has ever known. From the earliest Tours de France to the modern peloton, Peugeot helped shape professional cycling through legendary riders including Eddy Merckx, Tom Simpson and Bernard Thévenet. Gary follows the team’s evolution through the Roger Legeay years, from Z and GAN to Crédit Agricole, tracing a remarkable lineage that lasted more than a century.

A story of innovation, champions, iconic jerseys and lasting legacy - this is the family tree of Peugeot.

When is a race not a race? When the GC lead decides he doesn’t fancy it? Gary’s apathy towards the current Maglia Rosa might be taking a turn for the worse, but how does the sport balance spectacle and safety? Still, over the Mediterranean in Burgos, the Women’s World Tour continues to serve up Actual Racing and new winners and it all bodes well for the Giro d’Italia Women which rolls out next weekend. The team look ahead to this, a sprinter-unfriendly final week of the men’s Giro and also take delight in the SRAM v UCI legal case being settled in favour of the kids rather than the man.

📸 The greatest winning margin in Giro d'Italia history occurred in the 1914 edition, when Italian Alfonso Calzolari (pictured) defeated his compatriot Pierino Albini by 1 hour, 55 minutes, and 26 seconds. Of course, given that the average length of each of that edition’s 8 stages was almost 400km, then perhaps such a time gap is surprising but not shocking. Tadej Pogacar’s 9:56 margin over Dani Martinez in 2024 remains the greatest margin in more recent times, although that is still closer than Vittorio Adorni’s 11:26 over Italo Zilioli in 1965 or the 1954 battle between Swiss riders Hugo Koblet and Carlo Clerici which saw Koblet trail home over 24 minutes behind his victorious compatriot . Join Chris Sidwells throughout this year’s men’s Giro d’Italia for some little slices of Corsa Rosa history.

Before the curtain fell on one of cycling’s most mercurial careers, Marco Pantani returned to the Giro in 2003 and faced a haunting, human battle to find himself on the roads that had once made him a legend.

This is the story of the Last Hurrah or Marco Pantani.

The Giro d’Italia is safely (ish) back on home turf so the team take stock of the first week and a bit of the year’s first Grand Tour. Predictably, Jonas’ Blockhaus blockbuster don’t impress Gary much (his time trial even less so) but is it just a matter of time before the Danish Dynamo (cough) chalks up a debut Maglia Rosa? Elsewhere in racing, is it mere coincidence that the subject of the last episode’s biggying-up, Mischa Bredewold took her first GC win at Itzulia? Of course it is, but that doesn’t stop Chris, David and Gary pushing themselves as the natural successors to Cyrille Guimard.

Vuelta Feminina! Giro! Lincoln Grand Prix! It's all happening at once, but that's no problem for our dynamic trio who just talk about other stuff anyway. Belgian toothpaste, for example, which may possibly give you a very different ring of confidence. Join Chris, David and Gary for nutrition and hygiene tips with some occasional bike racing thrown in for good measure.

📸 The Lincoln Grand Prix is one of the UK’s most prestigious domestic races and the one with the longest continuous history. First raced in 1956, only the global COVID outbreak in 2020 has prevented its running. Pictured here, Huddersfield CC’s Bob Eastwood narrowly edges out Tony Hewson to take the inaugural victory.
