About this listen
Actress Dame Ellen Terry was the highest paid woman in England, famous in America, Australia and across the UK.
But as a single mother with two illegitimate children, she lived completely at odds with Victorian society.
Aged just 16 she was married off to the 47 year old artist George Frederick Watts to serve as his model, experiencing the dominance of men in the creative sphere in a way the #metoo movement is still dealing with today.
Navigating the conflicts, taking control of her career and surviving and thriving with humour and good cheer in Victorian society is the subject of a new podcast series of 9 episodes, imagining how Ellen Terry would tell her story online today.
Ellen was born 175 years ago (the anniversary of her birth is February 22) but the enduring themes of feminism, motherhood, fame, creative power and compassion are as alive today as ever.
The podcast series is based on a stage play which starred Tina Gray and which has been performed across the UK, from The Edinburgh Festival to London and The RSC Swan Theatre in Stratford.
“Totally captivating… it’s pure magic” The Guardian
