The air was salt and stagnant diesel, and the man waiting on the bench was the greatest mystery of all: Agent Liam. Younger, sharper, his face yet unmarred by the scrubbing that would one day turn him into the hollowed-out wreck known as Roger Douglas.

Madison’s briefing was a collection of uncomfortable facts: a modernist villa on San Juan Island, three decapitated bodies, and a Guru who claims he was merely traveling through a meditative trance when the heads were taken.
