• Full Circle of Living and Dying: Experiences of a Death Doula
    Jan 27 2026

    Send us a text

In this episode of Death Is My Life, I sit down with Akhila Murphy, a trained end-of-life doula and the founding director of Full Circle of Living and Dying, a volunteer-based nonprofit serving Northern California. From the very beginning of my conversation with Akhila, I realized how little I truly knew about end-of-life doulas.

We talk about what end-of-life doulas actually do, how their role differs from and complements hospice care. Akhila shares how families are often assisted with holding an in-home wake, washing and shrouding the body, and creating meaningful rituals that help support the process of goodbye.

This conversations really teaches us about grief, meaning, and what it means to show up at the end of life.

  • Show Me the Evidence! Death, God, and the Science of Consciousness (with Jeff)
    Jan 9 2026

In this episode, I meet with the astronomer and physicist, the wonderful Jeffery Stein, to discuss his ever-lasting quest to find evidence of God. He shares stories about his non-religious upbringing within the Jewish temple, including an early memory of questioning the validity of biblical teachings directly to the rabbi. He shares a compelling account of God-like signs while in Florida that continue to perplex him today.

Together, we explore why people turn to religion for comfort, the tension between faith and common sense, and how belief systems can shape near-death experiences. Jeff also opens up about his personal experience with loss and how he carries his friends with him through music and keeping the memories alive.

We also take the leap into quantum physics and is consciousness created by the brain? Or does consciousness create the universe? What can quantum physics (and Einstein's “spooky action at a distance”) teach us about reality, connection, and what happens when we die?

Every January, millions of people set New Year's resolutions- only to abandon them within weeks. In this episode, we explore why traditional New Year's resolutions fail and how they may be out of alignment with out natural rhythms, nervous systems and deeper needs.

We look at the ancient origins of New Year's traditions, the psychology behind failed resolutions, and how modern culture pressures us to "start over" at a time when the body is still craving rest and reflection.

In this conversation, I sit down with David (a veteran and therapist in training) to explore ambiguous loss- the kind of grief that doesn't come with a clean ending or closure. We talk about "living losses" like Alzheimer's, family estrangement, mental illness and addiction, divorce and even losing a home, a community, or the life you thought you'd have. David shares how leaving the military can trigger profound grief through the loss of camaraderie and identity, and why veteran suicide is sometimes tied not only to PTSD, but to a painful, unnamed sense of loss.

We also unpack attachment styles, how they shape the way we grieve, and what healthy boundaries can look like- especially when someone is alive but unsafe or unavailable emotionally. Finally, we offer practical coping tools and discuss meaning- making through spirituality, signs and David's experience with psilocybin- assisted healing as a veteran.

  • The Many Faces of Grief: Conversations on Loss, Leadership and Compassion
    Dec 22 2025

In this episode of Death Is My Life, I sit down with Jimmy for an honest conversation about grief, leadership, and what it really means to hold it together when loss is part of everyday life. We talk about how grief shows up differently for everyone — especially for caregivers, leaders, and those who feel pressure to stay strong for others.

Jimmy shares his experience navigating loss through mentorship, caregiving environments, and internal grief that doesn’t always appear emotional on the outside. Together, we explore sudden versus expected loss, grief beyond death, workplace grief, and the unseen emotional trauma carried by people in leadership roles. We also touch on compassion fatigue, beliefs about the afterlife, signs from loved ones, and how remembering those we’ve lost can shape how we live.

This episode is for anyone who has ever been the steady one — and for those learning that compassion, honesty, and presence matter more than having it all together.
