  • The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch
    May 15 2022

It's Phil's pick this time around and Jay, under the influence of Chew-Z spends far too much time debating the meaning of the word 'stigmata'.  More importantly, what does a Barbie doll like character called Perky Pat have to do with colonies on Mars? There's a lot to unpack in this second go around with a Phillip K. Dick novel and Jay experiences 60 Freuds of stress as he ends up having to reread the book. (Yes stress is measured in Freuds in the Dickensian universe.)

(Faithful listeners will remember that last time I warned that if you don't recommend a book for us, Phil may end up breaking  the spine of Dog-eared and Cracked with yet another Phillip K. Dick recommendation. And look where we are now!)

We are also on Twitter now...@dogeared_pod, (at least until Palmer Eldritch...oops I mean Elon Musk's purchase offer goes through and we are forced to pay per tweet). Kidding Elon, and yes we will certainly have you on our next podcast.

  • The Year of Living Biblically
    Feb 20 2022

Pigeon eggs and puzzles, the guys live vicariously through AJ Jacobs as he spends a year living his day to day according to the bible.

Has Jay picked a book that Phil enjoyed reading? Or has Phil taken it a step too far this time as he recklessly reads the book by...wait for it...listening to it!

  • Dune
    Jan 14 2022

Wait has Phil picked a book this time that' s not out of print? Hold on, this book has actually been read by a few people. What? Has Dog-eared and Cracked finally sold out ? Picking a book to read that isn't obscure or a hundred years old ?

That's right we are taking on Dune this time! Despite all the sand in this book, this podcast is no day at the beach. Tune in to Jay's disappointment when he discovers the book's constant references to spice have nothing to do with the Spice Girls.

  • The Night of the Gun
    Oct 30 2021

In this episode, Jay takes on Phil's pick and together they try and figure out if this is just another junkie memoir or a genuine investigation into the fallacy of our memories.

Along the way, Jay introduces controversy in his revolutionary and heroic attempt to change the rating scale. Will Phil hold fast or will the ensuing chaos put the entire future of the podcast in jeopardy?

  • Autumn
    Sep 18 2021

Autumn, a collection of essays  by Karl Ove Knausgaard, is Jay's pick on this episode.

Will the book become Phil's gateway drug to other Knausgaard collections or do Autumn's leaves blow away in the wind of criticism? (That sounded better in my head)

And how does Phil manage to bring baseball into the conversation...yet again?

  • Knowledge of Angels
    Aug 27 2021

Jay  drags out every philosophy and theology book he owns to try and keep up with Phil on this one. Turns out Knowledge of Angels involves a child raised by wolves, a shipwrecked atheist and  a  Grand Inquisitor.  Spoiler alert, he's not called the Grand Inquisitor because he's a really good listener.

  • Catch-22
    Aug 8 2021

    "You mean there's a catch?"

"Sure there's a catch," Doc Daneeka replied. "Catch-22.  Anyone who wants to get out of listening to this episode of Dog-eared and Cracked isn't really listening."

In this episode, Jay swears a loyalty oath and Phil writes 'share' on a piece of paper in response to Jay's request for a share of Dog-eared and Cracked profits.

This episode is a Dog-eared and Cracked 1st,  as Jay recommends a book for Phil that neither of them has read. Will this  reckless break in protocol create unresolvable chaotic havoc? Or will Jay learn to stop using excessive adjectives? Listen in to find out.
