Thirteen-year-old Max is a legend in Cape KOTO, a quiet seaside village. He should be living the dream as a Keeper Of The Ocean, diving for his dad on a tugboat called the Big Dipper, but lately that dream has felt more like a nightmare. Unsure if KOTO Diving is his true calling, Max becomes convinced he needs to get out and start over somewhere new. But, is running away the answer?

Despite the hopelessness Max feels about the state of the ocean and the doubts he has about becoming a KOTO Diver, he understands he still has a job to do. But no one in Cape KOTO, not even Max, could have seen this day coming.

When running away doesn't seem to solve Max's problems, doubt begins to seep into his mind and he begins to feel a tremendous amount of heartache for leaving Cape KOTO and his family. His sadness becomes the least of his problems when Max realizes he is not alone in the woods...someone or something is out there...watching him.

After a frightful night alone in Rivers Edge Forest, Max is shocked to see a familiar face when he wakes up. With this surprise, Max's sense of purpose and love for his family is immediately renewed. He knows just what he needs to do.

An unexpected visit from the Great Witch Banni brings hope to Max and his crew as a haze of anxiety lingers over them.

Unbeknownst to the group inside the Swift family home, several unsavory characters from Toxic Metropolis are lurking outside, waiting for the perfect moment to make their move.

With the Great Witch Banni's blessing, along with the support of the Big Dipper crew, Max heads out to put his plan into action.
