    Jun 24 2025
The Emu War, also known as the Great Emu War, was a bizarre wildlife management operation carried out by the Australian Army in 1932. In response to thousands of emus destroying wheat crops in Western Australia's Campion district, ex-soldier settlers requested military aid. The government deployed troops under Major G.P.W.A. Meredith, armed with Lewis machine guns and 10,000 rounds of ammunition. Despite their firepower, the emus proved elusive and tactically savvy, evading ambushes and rendering the mission largely ineffective. The first attempt in early November ended in embarrassment, leading to a temporary withdrawal. A second campaign later that month had more success, with 986 emus confirmed killed by early December. However, even this did little to curb the overall population. The operation, mocked in Parliament and media, failed to meet its objectives and became a legend of military misadventure. Despite its oddity, the Emu War highlights the challenges of balancing agriculture and wildlife in Australia's unique environment and remains a fascinating chapter in both military and ecological history.
