Hey, welcome to Dungeon Jukebox. This is the channel where I talk about Dungeons and Dragons, tabletop RPGs, and what it was like to be a Gen X kid who discovered all of this back in the early eighties — and never really recovered. Fair warning: I say "um" a lot. Drinking game optional.SD

  • Daggerheart vs D&D 5e: Is Daggerheart Better?
    May 21 2026

Is Daggerheart better than Dungeons & Dragons 5e? After decades of D&D, I've been running Daggerheart and I have opinions. In this video I break down what Daggerheart gets right, what still bugs me, and whether it's worth making the switch.

    Topics covered:

    • Daggerheart cards vs D&D rulebooks — why cards win for new and veteran players
    • Hope and fear dice: great mechanic or too vague?
    • The "fail with consequence" problem in Daggerheart (and D&D)
    • D&D 5e rules bloat, bonus actions, and why DnD Beyond feels like a subscription trap
    • Daggerheart campaign frames — the Umbra frame and Dark Souls vibes
    • Daggerheart races: Galapa, Simiah, and the best Hodor moment I've ever run
    • Why I'm also watching Stonetop and Dungeon Crawler Carl TTRPG

Whether you're a forever DM, a new player, or just wondering if Daggerheart is worth buying, this is a no-fluff take from someone who's been rolling dice since the early editions.

🎲 Games mentioned: Daggerheart, D&D 5e, EZD6, Call of Cthulhu, Blades in the Dark, Stonetop, Dungeon Crawler Carl

  • Did Dungeons & Dragons Ruin TTRPGs?
    May 19 2026

In this episode, I take a wander through the history of D&D — from the TSR days of second edition, late nights, sugared sweets, and squishy wizards, all the way through to the bloated, shiny corporate machine that fifth edition has become.

I talk about the rise of celebrity DMs and performative play, why the bonus action might be the most contentious two words in tabletop gaming, and why I genuinely think fifth edition's success has paradoxically been the best thing to happen to the hobby — because it supercharged the OSR (Old School Revival).

We also dig into some brilliant alternatives: Shadowdark, Old School Essentials, Dolmenwood, EZD6, Cairn, Cal Arath, and more — games that prove you don't need 400 pages of rules to have an epic night at the table.

This one's for the grognards, the curious newcomers, and everyone who's ever had an argument mid-combat about what a bonus action actually does.

    Games mentioned: D&D 5e, 2e, 3e/3.5, 4e | Pathfinder | Shadowdark | Old School Essentials | Dolmenwood | Mythic Bastionland | EZD6 | Cairn | Into the Odd | Cal Arath (Castle Grief) | Index RPG | Mookburg | Stonetop

Channels worth checking out: Quinn's Quest | Dungeon Craft
