About this listen

In this episode, we talk with Troy Hovenden, the Reptile Bloke about what to do when you come across a snake while you bushwalking.

Snakes are not in ordinary circumstances angry, mad, or aggressive animals. They don’t go out of their way to cause harm to us humans. However, if you get too close they will become insecure and may lash out in self defence. This is normal behaviour for a lot of animals. Not just snakes.

There’s no need to go waving your arms around and jumping up and down like a lunatic screaming and carrying on like a pork chop!

Also, don’t go stomping on the ground. This doesn’t work to keep snakes away. All the excessive movement is only more likely to make the snake nervous and it may react defensively as a result.

If you live in the Blue Mountains of Australia, and need a snake relocated, call Troy on 0404 109 421.

Troy Hovenden is a fully licensed and insured snake catcher servicing The Blue Mountains and Penrith areas. Fees apply.
