About this listen
Did you know that a marmot (Marmota marmota) hibernates for 6 to 8 months a year in its burrow, the hibernaculum? It spends the winter with its colony, curled up and huddled against its companions to conserve heat. Its heart rate drops from 220 to 30 beats per minute. It also loses nearly half its weight in a few months.
To learn more about this iconic species of the Mont-Blanc massif, listen to the first episode of our podcast for both young and old, produced by the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc in collaboration with ASTERS (Conservatoire d’Espaces Naturels de Haute-Savoie).
