When Equality for GS held it's first rally last Friday, we asked GS students to submit a brief experience of a time when they had to choose something, give up something, were worried about something (i.e., housing, food, medical concerns), etc. due to financial struggle while attending (or trying to attend) the School of General Studies. Though we shared these submissions at the rally, we wanted to share them here as well.

Monica Haines, a student in her third year at the School of General Studies at Columbia University, shares her story.

By the end of this semester, Monica will owe $15,000 to Columbia University, and she will owe another $15,000 next semester, totaling $30,000 for this academic year. She still has 34 credits to complete. If charged at this year’s rate, 34 credits would be $68,476. To help Monica and to thank her for sharing her story with Equality for GS, we have created a gofundme page for her with a goal of $60,000 to help cover some of those expenses. 100% of the money raised will go to Monica.
