A severed arm on a Florida dock, a 1950s game show built on lies, a Civil War–era courtroom straining under fear, and a band that still sounds alive in the studio - our latest conversation tackles a common theme: what honesty costs and why it still matters. We jump from sun-baked noir vibe of Bad Monkey’s to Robert Redford’s Quiz Show and The Conspirator, connecting the dots between satire, image, justice, and the quiet ways power shapes a narrative. Along the way, we dig into Duster’s stylish 70s chase energy and ask how a beloved, well-reviewed series gets cancelled before it finds its audience.

On the reading front, we explore The Gift of Not Belonging by Rami Kaminsky and the intriguing idea of the “outrovert”-socially fluid yet resistant to group think. Paired with Henry Winkler’s The Fonz and Beyond, we explore shedding labels, reinventing your creative path, and finding people who see you clearly. Both books turn belonging into a choice, not a box.

Then the headphones go on. Little Feat’s Strike Up the Band brings that live-in-the-room swagger - soulful, grooving, and unmistakably human—with Scott Sharrard’s soulful warmth and Tony Leone’s next-level drumming, honouring Richie Hayward’s legacy. We spotlight the grassroots surge of Sons of Legion and revisit Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats for a jolt of gospel-drenched soul that feels like a revival you can dance to. Across screens, pages, and tracks, we keep coming back to one thing: authenticity over image, craft over clout, and stories that ring true.

  • Remembering Rudy
    Nov 14 2025

    Send us a text

A plane held together by rope, bamboo, shouldn’t fly—yet five men bet their lives that it would. We share the true story of RCAF pilot Rudy Mendizabel and a small Allied crew who scavenged two wrecked Lockheeds on a bombed-out Java airfield and built one improbable lifeline. With a cratered runway, engines shaking, and surrender orders closing in, they chose risk over captivity and aimed for the open sea…

On Remembrance Day, this story becomes more than an adventure; it’s a lens on sacrifice, resilience, and the ordinary choices that people make in pursuit of freedom.

If this story moved you, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves real-life war history and aviation, and leave a review to help others find it. Your words help keep these memories alive …For What it’s Worth

  • Adressing Canada's Innovation Paradox
    Nov 6 2025

    Send us a text

Canada consistently ranks near the bottom of global innovation indexes — despite world-class education, research, and talent. In Addressing Canada’s Innovation Paradox, I explore the reasons why.

Drawing on insights from the Conference Board of Canada, Jim Balsillie, and the Council of Canadian Innovators, this episode exposes the roots of our productivity challenge: an outdated Industrial Mindset, indirect funding models, and a failure to own and scale our intellectual property.

It is time for a bold shift from an Industrial Mindset to a Knowledge Mindset - one that makes knowledge our primary commodity, not physical products and shows how Canada can become the innovator’s first customer, closing the commercialization gap and keeping innovation value at home.

Through real-world examples, research, and reflection, For What It’s Worth re-imagines how Canada can transform from an exporter of ideas to a global leader in innovation.

  • Making it Personal: How AI and Knowledge Management Can Transform Canadian Healthcare
    Aug 19 2025

    Send us a text

What if your doctor knew everything about you—not just your medical history, but your genetics, lifestyle, environment, and social circumstances? Abbas Zavar, a physician and digital health leader with over 20 years of experience, believes this comprehensive approach is the key to fixing Canada's broken healthcare system.

Our conversation dives deep into the crisis facing Canadian healthcare: overcrowded emergency rooms, months-long wait times, physician shortages, and a system that waits for people to get sick instead of preventing illness. Dr. Zavar challenges this reactive model, proposing a revolutionary shift toward personalized, proactive medicine powered by artificial intelligence and knowledge management.

The vision is compelling: imagine AI systems that can gather comprehensive health data across five domains—medical records, genetic information, lifestyle factors, environmental exposures, and social determinants—then transform this information into actionable knowledge for physicians. These systems wouldn't replace doctors but would augment their capabilities, handling administrative burdens that currently consume up to 20 extra hours per week while providing critical insights at the point of care.

We explore real-world applications already emerging, like systems that can analyze a patient's genetic profile to determine which medications will be most effective for their unique biology. We also discuss the barriers to implementation, from data silos and interoperability challenges to the slow pace of policy development in the face of rapidly advancing technology.

Throughout our discussion,Abbas Zavar emphasizes that the goal isn't to remove humanity from healthcare but to enhance it—freeing physicians from administrative tasks so they can focus on providing compassionate care. As he puts it, "AI won't replace physicians, but physicians who use AI will replace those who don't."

Join us for this fascinating glimpse into the future of healthcare, where medicine isn't based on statistics but tailored specifically to you as an individual. Subscribe now to hear more conversations about how technology and innovation are reshaping our world.

  • Trailer: Making it Personal: AI, Knowledge Management and the Future of Canadian Healthcare
    Jul 30 2025

    Send us a text

Canada's healthcare system, once the crown jewel of our national identity, now faces an unprecedented crisis. Emergency rooms overflow with patients waiting hours for care, while millions struggle to find a family doctor. The healthcare professionals we depend on are burning out at alarming rates, caught in a system that seems increasingly unable to meet the complex needs of Canadians.

But what if we're looking at the problem all wrong? What if the solution isn't just about more funding, more beds, or more doctors? Abbas Zavar MD, from the University of Toronto's Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation suggests a paradigm shift – one that leverages the power of personalized medicine and artificial intelligence to transform how care is delivered.

Through groundbreaking research, Zavar explores how we might collect and consolidate medical data from numerous sources using AI, applying sophisticated knowledge management methodologies to transform data and information into actionable insights. This approach wouldn't just benefit individual patients through more tailored care – it could fundamentally reduce strain on the entire system by improving outcomes, enhancing efficiency, and boosting patient satisfaction.

From overcrowded emergency rooms to remote rural healthcare areas, from fragmented provincial systems to the mounting pressures of an aging population, we examine the challenges facing Canadian healthcare and the innovative approaches that could chart a path forward. Whether you're a healthcare professional, policy maker, or simply a concerned Canadian, this conversation offers a compelling vision for how we might preserve the universal, accessible care that defines us as a nation.

Subscribe now and join us for "Making it Personal" – an episode that might just change how you think about the future of healthcare in Canada.

  • Making Sense of it All with Anne Applebaum (in absentia)
    Feb 10 2025

    Send us a text

What drives individuals to align with or resist oppressive regimes? #AnneApplebaum's compelling essay originally published in the #Atlantic in 2020 #HistoryWillJudgetheComplicit, digs into the complex motivations that underpin political behaviours, through the telling of stories from real people and real experiences.

Through her writing we can begin to understand #DonaldTrump and untangle the enigma of Republican responses to his presidency. Applebaum's essay delves into the contrasting political paths of #MittRomney and #LindseyGraham, whose decisions during Trump's era raise thought-provoking questions about loyalty, ideology, and personal conviction. How do their stories reflect broader patterns of complicity and resistance in the face of authoritarianism? We take a critical look at the Trump administration's impact on American politics, drawing connections to historical instances of political resistance and the enduring struggle between personal values and public pressure and the darker side of human nature.

Finally, Applebaum's helps us reflect on the themes of collaboration and complicity within the Republican Party, as we ponder the upcoming Canadian election, and think deeply about who will best serve our collective interests during this critical time in our history. Tune in again on Friday February 7th for Part 2 of #MakingSenseofitAll. And please share this episode with anyone concerned about the state of democracy in the U.S. , Canada and around the world ...for what it's worth
