The girl and the boy referred to aren't based on particular people, but represent general situations, feelings and actions which many of us have experienced and maybe still experience today. It can be so easy to hide our true feelings behind a mask, and to lock down our hearts, being too afraid to let anyone in and see underneath our fake smiles to the pain the really lies beneath.

When we try to find joy and satisfaction in anything in the world, we load all of our hopes onto one thing, like friends, relationships, possessions, status. But time after time these things fail us. They fail us because they were never designed to bear the weight of our joy and our satisfaction.
