You are not lacking discipline.
You are fighting the wrong battle.
In this episode, I break down why behaviour change so often fails, even when you start strong, and why the real problem is not effort. It is the system around you.
A common question is why habits do not stick. You stay consistent for a week or two, then slip straight back into old patterns. It feels like a discipline problem, but it usually is not. It is a system problem.
I explain the difference between willpower and system design. Willpower depends on how you feel in the moment. Systems shape what you do regardless of how you feel. When your environment supports the behaviour, consistency becomes easier. When it does not, you are constantly relying on effort to push through.
So how does your environment influence your actions? It comes down to what is easy, what is visible, and what is reinforced. Small details shape your decisions more than you realise. If the right behaviour is difficult, you will avoid it. If it is simple, you are far more likely to repeat it.
This is why high performers rely on systems, not motivation. They design their environment to reduce friction and make the right action the natural choice.
I also break down how to reduce friction in a practical way. Removing small barriers, simplifying steps, and making behaviours more accessible can have a significant impact over time.
This builds on everything in the series so far. Values, standards, consistency, accountability, trust, and influence all rely on behaviour. And behaviour is shaped by the system around you.
Because if the system is working against you, discipline will always feel harder than it needs to be.
I also explain how this applies to leadership and teams. Systems influence behaviour more effectively than instruction. When the environment supports the right actions, performance improves without constant intervention.
If you have been trying to change habits and finding it difficult to maintain, this episode will help you understand why, and give you a practical way to fix it.
Because real progress does not come from trying harder.
It comes from designing better systems.
