Seth and Eric begin our first Fantasy Movie League Draft. You may have seen a similar format, such as Big Picture Podcast's annual movie auction or Kinda Funny's Fantasy Critic. The concept is simple: Seth and Eric essentially create their own movie studios and draft movies slated for release in calendar year 2026. If the movie is rated well and excels at the box office, points are awarded; if it flops, points are taken. 16 Movies, 4 Counter Picks, 2 Teams, and 1 Champion. Full rules below
🏆 2026 Movie Fantasy League: Official Rules
The Matchup: 1-on-1 | Draft Format: Snake (A-B-B-A)
Roster: 8 Main Movies + 2 Counterpicks
📊 Phase 1: The Scoring System
Points are calculated once a movie’s score has "settled" (14 days after wide release).
🎬 Part A: Letterboxd (Quality)
Base Points: (Score - 3.2) \times 100
Masterpiece Bonus: +50 Points if the final score is 4.0 or higher.
Penalty: If a movie scores below 3.2, it generates negative points (e.g., a 2.8 = -40 points).
💰 Part B: Box Office Milestones (Commercial)
The Century Mark ($100M): +10 Points
The Global Hit ($500M): +25 Points
The Billion Club ($1B): +40 Points
The Mega-Hit ($2B): +75 Points
Studio of the Year: +50 Points to the team with the highest cumulative worldwide box office.
⚔️ Phase 2: The Counterpick (Hater Bonus)
Each team drafts 2 movies from either team or the remaining pool, that they think will fail (score below 3.2).
The Steal: If a counterpicked movie scores a 2.8, the hater earns +40 points (stealing the negative value).
The Backfire: If the movie scores a 3.2 or higher, the hater gets 0 points.
🛡️ Phase 3: Roster Management
Strategic Drops: You have 2 drops to use for any reason (e.g., bad trailers, poor buzz).
Emergency Drops: You have 2 extra drops valid only if a movie is officially delayed to 2027.
The Lock: A movie is "locked" and cannot be dropped once it:
Premieres at a major Film Festival (Cannes, Sundance, etc.).
Is within 30 days of its theatrical release.
