In 2015, I packed a bag and flew to upstate New York to attend a workshop with Bobby McFerrin. I was a trained opera singer. I had spent years performing on big stages. And when I walked into that room and heard 190 voices singing together, I got a lump in my throat the size of a softball and couldn't make a single sound.

This is a story about what that moment unlocked — and why it took me 30 years to get there.
