Here’s a brief history of reefer madness and the 430 holiday: "Reefer Madness" refers to the anti-marijuana propaganda campaign in the 1930s that portrayed cannabis as a dangerous drug leading to insanity and violence, steeped in racism. This campaign contributed to the prohibition of cannabis in the United States. The prohibition of cannabis gained traction in the 20th century, leading to the enactment of the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, which effectively criminalized the plant at the federal level. This set the stage for decades of strict drug enforcement policies, including the War on Drugs in the 1970s and 1980s. The term "420" is associated with cannabis culture and originated in the early 1970s. A group of high school students in California, known as the "Waldos," would meet at 4:20 p.m. to search for a rumored abandoned cannabis crop. Eventually, "420" became a code word for cannabis consumption and April 20th (4/20) evolved into an informal holiday celebrating cannabis culture.
