  • A contemporary take on the wind quintet with Jeff Lederer
    Jun 8 2026

Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, where I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

I’m joined for this episode by saxophonist, clarinettist and composer Jeff Lederer to discuss his latest album - There’s a Yearnin’ - this intensely interesting album is a historic first recording of long-buried works by Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman and Oliver Nelson.

Thanks to Jeff for allowing me to play extracts from There’s a Yearnin’ alongside our conversation.

Ariana’s work takes us from Western classical music and Americana, including world premiere recordings of compositions by Shane Shanahan.

Thanks to Ariana for allowing me to play extracts from uncommon thread alongside our conversation.

  • Discovering singer songwriter Ntjam Rosie
    May 25 2026

Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, where I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

It was a real pleasure to speak to such an informed musician about her work - Ntjam Rosie is a Cameroonian-Dutch artist who really seems to have discovered her purpose and her sound. Her self-titled album is actually her ninth studio recording and it was fascinating to hear her thoughts on why now.

Thanks to Rosie for allowing me to play extracts from her self-titled album alongside our conversation.

Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, where I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

I first spoke to Todd Mosby in April 2021 and I was delighted to hear his latest album - American Heartland when it was released a few weeks ago.

Thanks to Todd for allowing me to play extracts from American Heartland alongside our conversation.

  • Discovering more about the score of ‘Frankenstein’ with Sara Karloff
    May 11 2026

Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, where I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

This episode is unusual, in that Sara Karloff is not a musician. She is the only daughter of Boris Karloff, star of many films but famously the 1931 adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Sara will join composer Michael Shapiro in London on 25 October as his original score is performed in London together with a screening of Frankenstein: commissioned in 2001, it has been presented in over 75 sold-out productions worldwide. I travelled to Milan in November 2021 and the experience of hearing Michael’s music while watching such a genre-defining and ground-breaking film from nearly a century ago was extraordinary.

I chatted with Michael in October 2020, April 2021 and October 2024.

The music I’m playing alongside my conversation with Sara Karloff is from Michael Shapiro’s In the Light of the Sun, performed by members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Stathis Karapanos (flute). I was fortunate in being in the studio when this was recorded.

Enjoy Frankenstein and Michael Shapiro’s score, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Cadogan Hall.

  • My third chat with bassist Mark Wade
    May 4 2026

Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, where I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

This is the third episode featuring bassist Mark Wade - the first was in July 2020 and the second in person in April 2024.

It was great to talk in person again about Mark’s new album - New Stages - which I have also now reviewed. I also saw Mark live at The Cowshed a few days after our chat.

If you’d like to find out more about the courses and concerts at Benslow Music, click here.

Thanks to Mark for allowing me to play extracts from New Stages alongside our conversation.

Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, where I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

This episode is a special one for International Jazz Day, featuring a conversation with music business professional and agent AJ Haseley, who I bumped into a few months ago at Bill Laurence’s gig at Cadogan Hall.

AJ has a lot to share about contemporary British jazz, so enjoy listening to our conversation.

  • A selection of chats with great musicians at jazzahead! 2026
    Apr 27 2026

Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, where I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

While spending four days at jazzahead! In Bremen last week, I chatted with several musicians and you can hear extracts from those chats here. I have also started including transcripts, if you would prefer to read what we have talked about.

    1. This episode begins with a tiny clip of Sahad’s set, before our conversation begins. Sahad is from Senegal - a musician and an activist and it was so inspirational to chat with him.
    2. I spoke to Polish composer and singer Hania Derej in the conference centre itself, so I apologise for the background noise.
    3. Santa Sillere is a Latvian jazz vocalist and it was a pleasure to chat about her music, and especially her work with Latvian poets.
    4. Canadian trumpeter Rachel Therrien has a new album out called Mi Hogar and we chatted about her music in the conference centre.
    5. My chat with Martin Fabricius was another one where we caught up in the hustle and bustle of jazzahead! He’s a Danish vibraphone player and we had lots to talk about.
    6. I first came across another Danish musician, Kristoffer Rosing-Schow, when listening to the music of The Counterfictionals. I hadn’t realised that Kristoffer is responsible for the art behind that sextet and he shared some of that with me alongside our chat.
    7. My final guest took me back into the Radio Bremen recording studio to chat with Swedish vocalist Sara Alden, who has just released Force of Nature.

Thanks to the team at jazzahead! for giving me such great access to amazing musicians, and a huge thank you to Radio Bremen (and especially engineer and producer Michael) for allowing me to use their recording facilities for three of these interviews.

In the background of Sara Alden’s interview and my conclusion, you can hear Jasmine Myra’s soundcheck.

You can also read my reviews of the four days I spent listening to music on my website.
