James and John approached Jesus asking for special favor for they feared God only had a limited amount of rewards. Jesus doesn't want Christians competing with one another trying to show off their level of devotion or worthiness. That misses what God wants for us and how we should act. A rich morally right man came before Jesus asking how to get into heaven. Jesus saw his heart and realized he had an obstacle stopping him from salvation, money.
