Key points: The better question to ask is: How can I support my daughter to find her own, intrinsic motivation in school?
Kids become more engaged in school and any activity if they have more autonomy in choosing the endeavor; this might entail them mentally switching from an attitude of, “I have to do well in school” to “Why might I want to do well?”
Ask your daughter questions like what kind of grades THEY want and why; why they like doing the activities that they do. Remember that having autonomy to choose activities causes kids and adults to become more engaged in that activity and to persist thru challenges; this leads to mastery of that thing and a sense of fulfillment.
It’s also valuable to connect kids with adults who are doing interesting jobs or jobs they have an interest in to stoke their interest and motivation.
