Columbus police broke their silence on the Tepe family murders. At a press conference, Chief Elaine Bryant confirmed investigators recovered the murder weapon from Michael McKee's Chicago apartment. Shell casings from Spencer and Monique Tepe's bedroom were matched through NIBIN to a firearm seized from McKee's residence. Multiple weapons were recovered. McKee allegedly held onto the gun for eleven days after the murders before his arrest. He was taken into custody at a Chick-fil-A in Rockford, Illinois by ATF agents on January 10th — hours before the Tepe family funeral. According to reports, McKee gave police an alibi before his arrest that didn't hold up. He invoked his right to remain silent only after he was handcuffed. Police confirmed McKee is the figure in the surveillance footage walking near the Tepe home during the murder window.

Bryant called this a "targeted domestic violence attack" but declined to disclose a motive. A reporter asked if neighbors had seen McKee at the Tepe home days before December 30th. Police wouldn't confirm — but didn't deny it. The family is now speaking publicly. Rob Misleh, Spencer's brother-in-law, said Monique never said McKee's name after the divorce. Called him a monster. Said she talked openly about emotional abuse and was always worried about him. The divorce was finalized in 2017 after a seven-month marriage. Eight years of silence. Then this. McKee faces two counts of aggravated murder with prior calculation and design. Death penalty eligible. He plans to plead not guilty. Next court date: January 23rd.
