根據使徒行傳8章9到24節，西門是在撒馬利亞行邪術的人，並且深受百姓的尊敬。
他藉著執事腓利的傳道而信了耶穌基督，甚至也受了洗，然而，當他看見聖靈被賜下時，便拿錢來，說：「把這權柄也給我，叫我手按著誰，誰就可以受聖靈。」（使徒行傳8:19）
這是一種錯誤的態度，他不是把聖靈的恩賜視為「從主(God)而來的神聖禮物」，反而把它當作可以用人的權勢和金錢來交換的能力。
