Step inside one of Britain’s most iconic cathedrals… and look up.

High above the stone arches of Lincoln Cathedral, a small carved figure sits watching. Twisted. Grinning. Frozen in time.

This is the legend of the Lincoln Imp.

In this first episode of Of Folk & Phantoms, we explore the eerie folklore surrounding one of the UK’s most unusual cathedral carvings. Said to be a mischievous creature turned to stone by an angel, the Lincoln Imp has become both a symbol of chaos and a beloved emblem of the city itself.

But where did the story come from?

Is it a genuine medieval legend… or a later invention shaped by Victorian storytelling and commercial ingenuity?

From echoes in empty halls to shadows in sacred spaces, this episode explores the line between folklore, history, and perception.
