It's the last night of the Pender County Fair, mid-September, 2019. Luna takes a call from a teenage girl hiding behind the Whac-A-Mole booth—a girl who says her friends keep walking toward a white van that's been circling the midway for an hour. The line goes dead. Then the call center lights up with three more calls from different locations inside the fairgrounds, all reporting the same van, the same man in a khaki jacket, the same smile. But when Luna checks the audio logs the next morning, the timestamps don't match the calls she remembers answering. And one of the callers—a man who said he was a security guard—never existed in the fair's personnel records. Luna drives out to the empty fairgrounds at dawn to find the Whac-A-Mole booth still lit, and a single stuffed rabbit propped on the counter, facing her.
