 In the autumn of 1998, a young woman drives east out of Red Bluff, Montana, following her grandmother's dying instruction to visit Saint Lucy's Cross—a roadside shrine at the edge of the Hi-Line, where the prairie meets the breaks of the Missouri River. She arrives at dusk, expecting to fulfill a simple request: replace an old rosary at the foot of the cross. But the wind carries voices she cannot unhear, and the names carved into the wood date back over a century. This is a story about what it means to answer a call that was never meant for you.
