It's late autumn when I first drive out to the old Channel 6 studio. The building smells of stale coffee and burnt electronics. I'm there to catalog archived tapes for a public television station, but what I find is a woman's face caught in the test pattern—a face that moves, that mouths words I can almost lip-read. She's been there for thirty years, and she is not a recording. This episode is the beginning of a descent into a very lonely broadcast. I make a mistake that night: I touch the screen. And now I can't stop seeing her.
