In the autumn of 2019, a young waitress named Jenny worked the 3 AM shift at the Rusty Spoon, a diner on the outskirts of Bakersfield, California. She had a regular—a man in a charcoal coat who always sat in Booth Seven, ordered black coffee, and spoke in half-sentences. Over the course of seven nights, he told her he was waiting for someone who never came. On the eighth night, he didn't show. But his coffee sat steaming on the table, and the diner's security feed showed the booth was empty the whole time. Luna tells the story of what Jenny saw when she finally looked closer at the man's face—and what she found in the seat after he left. A quiet, sticky, sorrowful story about loneliness and the things that keep us sitting in the dark, watching a door that never opens.
