It was the first week of January, 1987, when the elevator doors slid open onto a slaughterhouse floor in a town called Grimstead, Nebraska. The air was cold and thick with the smell of salt and rust. A single light swung over a row of hooks, and a man in a blood-stained apron was hosing down the concrete. He didn't look up when Luna stepped out.
