• Enslaved People of African Origin: Exploring Resilience and Freedom through World Heritage Sites
    Jan 13 2026

In this powerful episode, we journey through places that bear witness to one of the darkest chapters in human history: the transatlantic slave trade. But this is not just a story of suffering — it’s a story of memory, strength, resistance, and the enduring fight for freedom.

We begin at Cais do Valongo in Rio de Janeiro, once the largest port of arrival for enslaved Africans in the Americas and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. From there, we travel across the region to uncover stories etched into the landscapes:

    • The colonial streets of Trinidad and the Valley de los Ingenios in Cuba, where the echoes of forced labor still resonate

    • The Blue and John Crow Mountains in Jamaica, a sanctuary of resistance where Maroons fought for freedom

    • The National History Park – Citadel, Sans Souci, Ramiers in Haiti, a monumental symbol of the Haitian Revolution — the first successful uprising led by formerly enslaved people

These sites are more than historical landmarks — they are living testaments to courage and resilience.
