  • Urška Trunk l Fashion's Plastic Paralysis I #InFocus
    Feb 4 2025

In today’s special In-Focus episode, we speak with Urska Trunk, Senior Campaign Manager at the Changing Markets Foundation, about their latest investigation into Fashion’s Plastic Problem. Urska breaks down the report’s key findings, revealing the tactics some brands use to sidestep real accountability and why tougher regulations are urgently needed.

While it’s no surprise to see fashion giants like H&M and Shein on their red list, Patagonia’s inclusion caught us off-guard. We asked Urska how one of the most sustainable outdoor brands landed there, why plastic-based materials have the power to fuel the growth of fast fashion at an unprecedented pace, and what’s needed to course-correct before it’s too late.

The Changing Markets Foundation was formed to accelerate and scale solutions to sustainability challenges by leveraging the power of markets.

  • Lab Grown Fish - A Climate Change Solution?
    Nov 15 2024

Asia’s demand for seafood takes more than 60 percent of the global supply. Could lab grown fish be the solution to marine species extinction? Lab grown fish could be a game changer in Asia because the waters around these regions are becoming more and more overfished. And it turns out marine life in the ocean creates one of the largest carbon sinks on the planet. So losing fish species could disrupt the marine life food chain, putting this amazing ocean carbon sink at risk. But before we talk about lab grown fish as a climate change solution, we first have to understand the history of this overfishing problem in Asia and the importance of fish delicacies to the food culture here.

The episode was produced in partnership with Sustainable Asia. Based in Hong Kong, they produce engaging multimedia content about Asia and our planet. This collaborative episode is part of their podcast Season 16: “Cool Agriculture,” which looks at food and agricultural solutions for climate change.

  • Maria Colomer Canyelles l The Painter's Room I #InFocus
    Aug 8 2024

Today we’re zooming in on Kærshovedgård, a prison-turned-deportation centre in Denmark. It is one of two deportation centres in the country used to house rejected asylum seekers who have not agreed to voluntary return, as well as persons with so-called ‘tolerated stay’ (tålt ophold) status. Many of them stay there for interminable periods of time. In this episode, FairPlanet's Nour Ghantous sat down with director Maria Colomer Canyelles, who gave us a glimpse behind the scenes of her documentary ”the Painter’s Room,” the first ever to be filmed inside a deportation centre. The film follows the stories of two detainees, Artin, a young Iranian bodybuilder, and Jahan, a Kurdish man who has recently discovered his love for painting. Despite their seemingly hopeless future, they find ways to bring hope to their lives and to the people around them. “I hope it contributes to removing fear from our conversation,” Colomer Canyelles told FairPlanet. “There is a lot of fear in regards to the people who live in Kærshovedgård. The neighbours are scared of them. A big part of Danish society is scared of them. All over Europe, I think we're scared of people who live in deportation centres. When you get to know who these people are, we remember that these people are humans with stories like ours, with families, with needs.” How can you take action? Here are some organisations to look into:
