  • Garden of Seven Stones, Rarotonga, Cook Islands
    Jul 5 2025

This soundscape takes you to the shores of Rarotonga, Cook Islands. The Garden of the Seven Stones was the departure point in the story of The Great Fleet, the seven vaka/waka many Māori believed sailed out into the Pacific Ocean and eventually landed on what would become known as Aotearoa New Zealand.

Yes, this episode is not a soundscape from Aotearoa! But Aotearoa has a long connection with the Cook Islands and this specific location is very important to many Māori, please enjoy the sounds of the ocean crashing onto the reef in the Avana Passage.

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade describes the Cook Islands as 'a self-governing state in 'free association' with New Zealand.'

  • Aro Valley, Te Whanganui-ā-Tara Wellington
    Aug 21 2021

This Bonus Ep of Intrepid Aotearoa takes you to Aro Valley; an inner-city suburb in Wellington close to Central Park, Waimapihi Polhill Reserve, and Zealandia. Relax to 9 minutes of birds singing in the morning. The only reason this episode could be recorded is due to the Alert Level 4 Lockdown in Aotearoa New Zealand. Usually, these birds are drowned out by city construction, the motorway, and building air-con units. You can still hear a little bit of city white noise but you’ll also hear Starlings, Tūī, and Kākā clearly.

  • Westshore Beach, Ahuriri Napier
    Jun 19 2021

The second episode of Intrepid Aotearoa takes you to Ahuriri Napier, the Art Deco capital of the world! But we’re not here for the architecture, we’re here for the moana. Relax to 25 minutes of waves crashing onto the pebble beach on a still Napier evening. There is the occasional breeze but the ‘white noise’ is the sound of the pebbles tumbling.
